인터넷서 한 때 인기를 끈 투명 컴퓨터 놀이.

디지털 카메라로 실내를 찍은 뒤 컴퓨터의 배경화면으로 앉히고 배경, 배율, 각도를 정교하게 맞추면 스크린이 마치 투명한 것처럼 보이는 착시기법이다..(*사진참조)

네티즌들의 착시기법에서나 볼 수 있었던 투명 컴퓨터의 꿈이 수 년 내에 현실로 나타날 것으로 보인다. 미국 오레곤 주립대학에서 개발 중인 투명 TFT가 바로 그것.

유리판에 아연과 산화주석을 분사하면 평소 투명한 상태로 남지만 전류를 흘려주면 발광하는 원리를 이용한 표시장치다. 이 투명 TFT는 고온에도 견딜 수 있고 플라스틱처럼 자유롭게 구부릴 수도 있어 다양한 활용이 가능하다는 것이 오레곤 주립대학 연구진의 설명이다.

고열을 견디는 성질을 이용하면 자동차엔진에 직접 부착하는 표시장치를 만들 수 있으며 곡면 화면을 지닌 휴대용 전자기기 등의 개발도 가능하다.

하지만 가장 유용한 특성은 바로 투명한 상태를 유지하는 화면이다. 자동차의 앞 유리 전체를 거대한 컴퓨터 화면으로 활용할 수 있어 각종 계기판이나 표시장치를 운전자의 눈높이에 맞추어 투사할 수 있다.

자동차 전체에 이 장치를 적용할 경우 투명-불투명을 오가며 카멜레온처럼 변신하는 자동차용 전자 색유리 역시 유력한 대안 중 하나.

마찬가지로 기존 TFT-LCD의 기술적 한계때문에 표시장치가 들어가지 못했던 주택에도 혁신적인 응용이 가능하다. 목욕탕의 거울이 TV로 변신하거나 사생활 보호용 화면보호기가 감각적인 동영상 무늬를 표시해 주는 거실 유리창 등의 색다른 아이디어 역시 실현이 가능하다.

투명 TFT 개발을 지휘하고 있는 오레곤 주립대학의 컴퓨터 엔지니어 존 웨이거는 향후 수년 이내에 군사용으로 이 기술이 먼저 적용되기 시작할 것으로 보고 있다. 전투기의 조종석을 감싸는 유리 등이 바로 그것. 일반 제품에 대한 상용화는 2020년께부터 이루어질 전망이다.
